About cookies

A cookie is a file containing an identifier (a string of letters and numbers) that is sent by a web server to a web browser and is stored by the browser. The identifier is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server.

Cookies may be either “persistent” cookies of “session” cookies: a persistent cookie will be stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date; a session cookie, on the other hand, will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.

Cookies do not typically contain any information that personally identifies a user, but personal information that we store about you may be linked to information stored and obtained from cookies.

Our cookies

We use both session and persistent cookies on our website.

The names of the cookies that we use on our website, and the purposes for which they are used, are set out below:

We use exp_csrf_token to protect against Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF). A CSRF attack forces a logged-on victim’s browser to send a forged HTTP request, including the victim’s session cookie and any other automatically included authentication information, to a vulnerable web application. This allows the attacker to force the victim’s browser to generate requests the vulnerable application thinks are legitimate requests for the victim.

We use exp_tracker; which is a temporary cookie that remains in the internet browser’s folder of your computer until you close the browser. It contains the last 5 pages viewed and is typically used for form or error message returns.

We use exp_last_visit. This cookie remains in your browser for one year and contains the date of the user’s last visit.

We use exp_last_activity; which remains in your browser for one year and records the time of the last page load. It is used in conjunction with the exp_last_visit cookie.

We use exp_sessionid. This is used when cookie and session are set as the session type. Used only for logged in members.
